No matter the past or present relationship you’ve experienced with your earthly father, there is an incredible relationship awaiting you, with your Heavenly Father.
Contemporary Christian recording artist Chris Tomlin released a worship song called “Good, Good Father,” reminding the Body of Christ who their Father is and what He is like. (This being Father’s Day weekend, you might want to listen, available at YouTube, or the link below.)
As Pastor, I struggle speaking to the many that have had a broken relationship with their earthly father.
He may have abandoned, abused, neglected, rejected you, or left the family due to death or divorce creating an empty spot that never gets filled. Pastor Cathy for instance, has had to live her entire adult life without the benefit of her earthly father’s love and support, due to an unexpected death.
Speaking of God the Father, Chris Tomlin wrote…“there are many stories of who You are.” For some to think of God as being a Father, reminds them of “pain” they would rather forget. That is why I take this Father’s Day to remind us, we have a good, good Father. It is who He is. He never will leave us, nor forsake us. He has blessed us and will continue to bless us. He is always delighted to see and hear from us. He is forever working on our behalf, to do us good and not harm. Often He is blamed for any pain.
It is Jesus who introduces us to our Father. In teaching us to pray, He says, “Our Father, who art in Heaven…” He even goes so far as to say, “When you see me, you see the Father” (John 14:9). A Valuable insight when we hear one of the “many stories” of what He is like. All we have to do is compare it, is this what Jesus is like? We then know whether to believe the story we are hearing.
As an earthly father I want to leave an accurate image of my Heavenly Father, enabling my children/grandchildren to trust God without complicating fears.
I love the patience of God! He is patient. He is slow to anger…He seems to never give up…He waits for me to see what is important to me…He waits for me to decide an issue…all way beyond “my” limited impatience! I am far from His patience…but I am ever trying to be like Him.
Why patience? It achieves the promises of God and reflects an amazing contrast between heavenly and earthly fathers.
Hebrews 6:12
12 that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
In this very impatient world, can you think of a better reflection? He is a “Good, Good Father.”
